Launched: Youth-Led Domestic Abuse Prevention for Young People

This March, we launched our latest programme to prevent domestic abuse and promote healthy relationships; Relationship Battery™ uses young people’s voices and lived experiences to prevent harm before it starts.

The reality is that domestic abuse in relationships starts early, according to statistics:

    • 49% of teenagers in intimate relationships aged between 13 and 17 in England and Wales experienced violent or controlling behaviour. (Youth Endowment Fund, 2024).
    • Women aged 16 -19 are more likely to be victims than women aged 25 years and over. Similarly, men aged 16 – 19 were most likely to experience domestic abuse than at any other age. (ONS, 2020)
    • Young people aged 16-24 were the highest percentage of victims of domestic abuse in the year ending March 2024. (Crime Survey for England and Wales: Office for National Statistics, 2024).

The programme idea is simple: like a battery, relationships can charge us up or slowly drain us over time. Using this everyday metaphor, Relationship Battery™ helps young people notice how behaviour in friendships and relationships affects how they feel. They learn to recognise early signs of pressure or control and to trust those feelings as important signals.

Instead of focusing on labels or disclosure, this approach is preventative, recognition-focused, and nonjudgmental. A short animated film introduces the concept in an accessible, safe way. Facilitated sessions support the film in schools and youth settings.

Many unhealthy patterns begin in friendships and online spaces, well before adult relationships. Helping young people notice and name what feels wrong early can reduce harm later.
